Twilight and Wolves no match for Patriot bats

Box Score

NEWBERRY, SC – The top two batters in the Francis Marion University batting order, freshman third baseman Michael Wilson and junior second baseman Brock McCallister, combined for seven hits, seven runs scored, and five runs batted in as the 12th-ranked Patriots cruised past Newberry College 17-1, Wednesday evening (April 13) in non-conference baseball action.

Francis Marion (30-10) scored in all but the eighth inning, while registering a season-high 21 hits and equaling its season high for runs scored.  Newberry drops to 20-24.

FMU will return home to open a key Peach Belt Conference series against seventh-ranked UNC Pembroke with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Wilson posted his second four-hit game of his young career as he went 4-for-7 with two triples, four runs scored, and two RBIs, while McCallister was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a homer, and three RBIs.

Junior center fielder Buddy Sosnoskie extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a 3-for-5 night that included a double and an RBI.  Senior first baseman Preston Shuey had two hits and surpassed 200 RBIs for his career with a fifth-inning two-run single.

Senior right-hander Joe Wagstaff (4-3) picked up the win as he allowed only three hits and one run in five innings  Four Patriot hurlers – Jarrott Hooks, Jordan Douglas, Jeremy Knab, and Zac Livingston – followed with one hitless and scoreless inning apiece.

Two Newberry errors in the top of the first inning helped lead to three unearned runs for the Patriots.  Senior left fielder Martin Gordon, the hero of Sunday's come-from-behind win at North Georgia, came through with a two-out, two-run single.  FMU added two runs in the top of the second before Newberry plated its lone run in the bottom half of the second.

C. Phillips (0-3) was the losing pitcher and center fielder Derek Bley drove in the Newberry run with an RBI single.
