Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Senior first baseman Preston Shuey drove in two runs with a single and a double and 24th-ranked Francis Marion University made the most of its four hits to claim a 4-2 win at Flagler College on Sunday (March 20) completing a three-game Peach Belt Conference sweep of the Saints.
The Patriots win for the fourth consecutive game and improve to 20-8 overall and 6-3 in the Peach Belt. Flagler loses its seventh game in a row and drops to 11-15 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
In the top of the first after Flagler starter Jake Brandenberger (1-2) issued two walks, Shuey singled home Brock McCallister and Buddy Sosnoskie plated John Jones with a sacrifice fly to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead.
In the FMU third, McCallister was hit by a pitch with one out. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to left center by Shuey. In the fourth inning the advantage expanded to 4-0 as Tyler Boyd doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Martin Gordon, and scored on a squeeze bunt by Tyler Cappelmann.
Flagler cut the lead in half after a pair of RBI singles by Ollie Bertrand and Justin McKenna in the sixth frame.
FMU freshman right-hander Jeffrey Stoner (4-0) tossed 5.1 innings, scattered five hits and two runs, while striking out four. Corey Carver pitched 2.1 scoreless innings before senior Patrick Mincey tossed the final 1.1 innings to record his third save of 2011.
Gordon had the Patriots' other hit of the contest, a single through the right side in the ninth inning.
Francis Marion hosts Barton College on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
