Second inning derails Patriots at Mount Olive

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MOUNT OLIVE, NC – Seventh-ranked Mount Olive College scored nine second-inning runs and went on to sweep a non-conference baseball doubleheader from 17h-ranked Francis Marion University, Wednesday evening (March 2).  The Trojans scored four runs in the second frame en route to a 7-0 win in game one, and then tallied five scores in the second inning of game two to help claim a 6-3 victory.

Both teams entered the twinbill sporting nine-game winning streaks.  Francis Marion drops to 11-5, while Mount Olive improves to 15-2.  The Patriots will open Peach Belt Conference play with a three-game series at 16th-ranked USC Aiken this weekend.  The series will begin with a single game on Saturday at 3 p.m.

FMU freshman third baseman Michael Wilson did manage a hit in both contests to extend his career-starting hitting streak to 15 games.

In game one, the Patriots had base runners in every inning but the sixth, but could not push across a run.

Senior right-hander Tyler Lehman (1-1) was tagged with the game-one loss as he surrendered four runs in 1.2 innings.  Coming into the twinbill, FMU hurlers had allowed only two earned runs in their last 50 innings.

Freshman left fielder Dalton Gress had two of FMU's six hits in the opener, while Wilson was 1-for-3 with a fifth-inning single.

Jeremy Hall (2-0) registered the shutout, while Jason Simone tied a school record with three doubles and Michael Knox clouted a two-run homer, his 12th of the young season.

FMU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in game two when Tyler Boyd walked, went to second on a single by Buddy Sosnoskie, stole third, and came home when the catcher's throw to third went into left field.

Mount Olive retook the lead with its five-run second inning.  The Patriot tallied single runs in the fifth (sacrifice fly by Boyd) and sixth (RBI ground out by Tyler Cappelmann).

Wilson was 1-for-3 with a single to right fifth in the fifth inning of game two.  Gress was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

FMU senior right-hander Corey Carver (0-1) allowed four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of game two.

Simone was 1-for-4 with two RBIs for the Trojans in the second contest.
