Box Score FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore right-hander Mario Rojas silenced the Francis Marion University bats on six hits over 6.1 innings to lead Newberry College to a 6-1 non-conference win over the Patriots, Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 8) in college baseball action.
Francis Marion drops to 1-2 and now begins a five-game road swing. The Patriots will play a two-game series at Pfeiffer University this weekend beginning with a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday.
Newberry (3-1) took advantage of four FMU errors to score four unearned runs.
The Wolves scored once in the top of the first when lead-off man Terrence Gray walked, stole second and third, and came home when the catcher's throw to third went into left field. Newberry upped its advantage to 4-0 with three runs in the second frame as Kevin Rufus hit a sacrifice fly and Gray had an RBI single to left.
Newberry plated two unearned runs in the sixth when Gray laced a two-out two-run single through the left side. Gray finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with a run scored and three driven in.
FMU scored its lone run in the bottom of the ninth when outfielder Sam Pepper stroked an RBI double to right field.
Freshman third baseman Michael Wilson (3-for-4) and junior Jeff Gaston (2-for-2) combined for five of FMU's eight hits. Francis Marion did have base runners, but the Patriots went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 runners on base.
Senior righty starter Phillip Mozingo (0-1) took the loss for the Patriots as he surrendered four runs (two earned) in 1.1 innings.
Rojas (1-0) struck out four in his 6.1 innings.
