Wagstaff leads Patriots to split of season-opening baseball twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FLORENCE, SC – Senior right-hander Joe Wagstaff tossed a three-hitter and Preston Shuey and Buddy Sosnoskie combined for four hits as 15th-ranked Francis Marion University beat King College 5-1 in the second game on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 6) to enable the Patriots to split the season-opening college baseball doubleheader.  King took advantage of five FMU errors in the opening contest to collect an 8-3 victory.

FMU (1-1) will play host to Newberry College on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

In the second game, Wagstaff (1-0) needed only 68 pitches, 46 of which were strikes, to complete the seven-inning contest. He struck out four, walked only one, and allowed only a first-inning run.

Shuey and Sosnoskie collected two hits apiece in game two, including RBI-doubles in a two-run Patriot fourth-inning.  King grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first frame on an RBI groundout by C.J. Stabler.  FMU tied the score when Chris Honeycutt scored on a wild pitch in the second.  Honeycutt put the Patriots up 2-1 in the third inning with a sacrifice fly and later in the frame Brooks Arnette upped the margin to 3-1 with a bases-loaded walk.

King righty Wesley Houser (0-1) took the loss.

In the opener, King right-hander Cory Rhodes (1-0) limited the Patriots to two hits in eight scoreless innings.  FMU scored its three runs off reliever Daniel Glenn in the bottom of the ninth.  Sosnoskie laced a run-scoring triple to right-center and then scored on an RBI groundout by Shuey.  Freshman third baseman Michael Wilson drove in the final run with an RBI single up-the-middle.

The Tornado scored all their runs in the first five frames off FMU sophomore righty Don Sandifer (0-1), although only one of the runs was earned.  FMU junior Sebie Kirkland tossed four scoreless innings of two-hit ball in relief.

King first baseman Steven Mueller was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.  Right fielder Bryant Walker delivered a two-run double in King's four-run third inning.

FMU right fielder Tyler Boyd had a pair of hits in game one.
