Wilson continues hitting streak as Patriots complete sweep of Seton Hill

Box Score

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman third baseman Michael Wilson continued his season-long hitting streak with a 3-for-5 day and 24th-ranked Francis Marion University completed a three-game weekend sweep of Seton Hill University with a 13-2 victory, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 27) in non-conference baseball action.

Francis Marion (11-3) extends its winning streak to nine games and the Patriots outscored the Griffin (0-3) 31-2 in the three-game series.

FMU senior right-hander Phillip Mozingo (2-1) picked up the win with five innings of effective work.  He struck out four, walked three and allowed four hits and one unearned run.  Three Patriot relievers held Seton Hill to one hit and one unearned run over the final four frames.

The Patriot pitching staff has allowed only two earned runs in its past 50 innings.

Wilson, a native of Florence, extended his hitting streak to 14 games.  He also scored twice from the lead-off position.  Including Wilson, each of the first five batters in the Patriot line-up scored twice.

Senior second baseman Brooks Arnette was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, while center fielder Buddy Sosnoskie and first baseman Preston Shuey were both 1-for-4 with two RBIs.  Senior left fielder Martin Gordon was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Patriots scored five times in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-run double by Shuey and a two-out, two-run infield throwing error.

The Griffins scored single runs in the fourth and ninth innings – both unearned.  Second baseman Dave McCarthy was 2-for-4, while right fielder Patrick Kohl had Seton Hill's lone RBI with a run-scoring ground out in the fourth – a play that saw Wilson make a spectacular diving stop behind the third base bag and then complete the long throw to first base for the out.

Seton Hill freshman lefty Alex Haines (0-1) pitched the opening two frames and allowed five runs (three earned) on two hits.

In his career-opening batting streak, Wilson is hitting exactly .500 (27-for-54) with 20 runs scored in the 14 contests.

FMU will play a doubleheader at ninth-ranked Mount Olive College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
