Patriot arms silence Griffins, 9-0 twice

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FLORENCE, SC – Five Francis Marion University pitchers combined for 16 scoreless innings as the 24th-ranked Patriots swept a non-conference doubleheader from Seton Hill University, 9-0 and 9-0, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 26) in college baseball action.

FMU sophomore right-hander Don Sandifer, who pitched a no-hitter in his last outing, allowed only one hit in eight innings and senior shortstop Tyler Cappelmann was 2-for-3 and drove in three runs as FMU won the opener 9-0.  The second contest, a seven-inning affair, saw senior righty Joe Wagstaff pitch five scoreless frames and freshman third baseman Michael Wilson extended his hitting streak to 13 games as FMU prevailed 9-0.

The Patriots improve to 10-3 and run their winning streak to eight games.  The Griffins (0-2) were playing their opening games of the 2011 season.  The two teams will conclude their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at noon.

Sandifer (3-1) allowed only a lead-off single to Michael Leviseur in the fifth inning. Sandifer struck out seven and walked only one to lower his season earned run average to 0.30.  Senior righty Corey Carver tossed a scoreless ninth inning.

In addition to Cappelmann's two hits, senior first baseman Preston Shuey was 2-for-4, junior designated hitter John Jones was 2-for-3, and junior catcher Brian Paulhus was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Wilson was 1-for-3 in the opener.

Seton Hill senior southpaw Rick Raraigh (0-1) allowed three runs in 2.1 innings and was tagged with the loss.

In the second game, FMU scored once in the first and seven times in the bottom of the second.  Wilson was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a double, and two RBIs.  Shuey was 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Buddy Sosnoskie had an RBI-double and Jones an RBI-single.

Wagstaff (3-1) struck out four, walked no one, and allowed only four hits in his five frames.  Sebie Kirkland and Matt Broderick each pitched a 1-2-3 inning.

Seton Hill starter Brent Daviault (0-1) was the game-two loser.  Third baseman Brendan Costantino was 2-for-3 to pace the Griffins in the second contest.
