FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore right-hander Don Sandifer tossed the 10th no-hitter in school history, allowing only two base runners, as Francis Marion University beat Winston-Salem State University 13-0, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 19) in non-conference baseball action.

FMU (6-3) picks up its fourth straight win, while Winston-Salem State drops to 5-6.  Francis Marion will play host to Benedict College on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Sandifer (2-1), a native of Bamberg, fanned a career-high 14 batters and walked only one.  That free pass came with two outs in the fifth inning.  Earlier in that frame, a Ram batter reached on an FMU infield error but was then erased on a double-play line-out.  The 14 punchouts were the most by a Patriot in four seasons and only three shy of the school record.

The 2010 Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year recorded eight ground ball outs, one line-out, one pop-up, and only two fly ball outs.

It is the first no-hitter for a Patriot since righty Dylan Owen beat UNC Pembroke 9-0 on March 12, 2005.  It is only the seventh nine-inning no-hitter in the history of the Peach Belt Conference. Owen was also the last Patriot to strike out 14 batters in a game.

At the plate, the Patriots pounded out 18 hits.  FMU scored the only runs it would need in the bottom of the first on a two-homer to left field by senior first baseman Preston Shuey.  Senior Brooks Arnette capped the afternoon with a pinch-hit grand slam home run in the bottom of the eighth.

Shuey finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three driven in.  Senior shortstop Tyler Cappelmann also had three hits and drove in one.  Four other Patriots registered two hits: Michael Wilson (2-for-5), Brock McCallister (2-for-5), Tyler Boyd (2-for-4), and Brian Paulhus (2-for-5).

Winston-Salem State starter Casey Starbuck (1-1) absorbed the loss as he allowed three runs in two innings.
