Box Score GREENWOOD, SC – A hot-shooting opponent and 14 turnovers resulted in a 15-point halftime deficit that prove too much for the Francis Marion University men's basketball team to overcome as the Patriots lost to Lander University 90-78, Wednesday night (Feb. 16) in Peach Belt Conference action.
Francis Marion (14-9, 7-8) was led by junior forward Liki Turner with 24 points and six rebounds. He was 16-of-17 at the free throw line, just missing the school record for accuracy which stands at 14-of-14. Senior reserve Dominique Coleman tallied 14 points, while Andrew Smith added 13 points and point guard Shawn Greenfield 10.
The Patriots will play at 11th-ranked Augusta state University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
David Pruett led Lander (10-13, 3-12) with 25 points, while Jermel Kennedy scored 22 points and Tovi Bailey 19.
Lander used a 10-0 run in the first half, along with the 14 FMU miscues, and eight made three-pointers (in only 13 attempts) to lead 47-32 at intermission.
Francis Marion rallied in the second half to cut the margin to a single possession at 79-76 following pair of Turner free throws with 2:24 remaining. FMU outrebounded the Bearcats 37-28, but a key carom got away from the Patriots on the ensuing possession. After a Lander miss, Kennedy grabbed one of his eight rebounds denying the Patriots at a chance to tie the game. From that point on, Lander hit 11-of-16 free throws in the final 1:46 to seal the win.
