Box Score FLORENCE S.C.- Francis Marion University wasted little time getting on the scoreboard early and often in its 4-0 win over Newberry College in men's soccer action Saturday afternoon (Oct. 8) at the FMU Soccer Field in Florence, S.C.
The Patriots (2-9-0) were lead by the combo of sophomore Alex Blandin and senior Cameron Mabee on their first pair of goals. Blandin's first of two goals came in the 11th minute when he took a long pass from Mabee in the middle of the 18 yard box and headed it backwards just over the hand of Newberry (5-6-0) keeper Joel Johnson.
Blandin's second tally came just four minutes later in the 15th minute, when a pass from Mabee led to Blandin scooting the ball past Johnson in a 1-on-1 setup for his fourth score of the year.
The Patriots added a third goal in the 28th minute when junior Chuy Cruz cleaned up a blocked shot off the foot of senior Adam Dillihay, and punched it into the back of the net. Dillihay then finished the scoring when he sliced a shot past Johnson for his first goal, assisted by sophomores Justin Walton and Stefan Gojic. Dillihay was making his first appearance of the season after returning from an injury that kept him out of the first 10 matches.
FMU outshot the Wolves 22-9 on the afternoon, and led Newberry 6-2 in corner kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper Nick Lucido had two saves in the match, while posting his second career shutout. Johnson made six stops for Newberry.
Francis Marion is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 12, when the Patriots host Peach Belt Conference foe USC Aiken. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
