Patriots warm up in Florida with third straight win

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Senior Shannon Singleton-Bates scored 22 points and Francis Marion University never trailed in securing a 67-48 Peach Belt Conference road win at Flagler College, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 22) in women's basketball action.

The Patriots even their PBC record at 4-4 while upping their overall mark to 11-5 with a third straight road victory.  FMU will play host to Georgia College on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Singleton-Bates connected on 8-of-14 field goal attempts, including both of her three-point attempts, and was 4-of-4 at the foul line.  In the process, she moved to within three points of former Patriot guard Christy Wright for seventh place on the Patriot career scoring list with 1,543 points.

Sophomore guard Courtney Mealing added 15 points for FMU and junior forward T.T. Belcher tallied seven points and 10 rebounds.

Guard Charlsea Owen led Flagler (4-11, 1-6) with 15 points, while center Rachel Brown registered 10 points and 15 rebounds.  The Saints remain winless against Francis Marion in three all-time meetings.

Singleton-Bates scored the game's opening two baskets and the Patriots would not surrender the lead.  A 10-2 spurt, capped by a pair of three-pointers by Singleton-Bates, extended the advantage to 18-8. Leading 28-21, the Patriots scored the final eight points of the first half, including a pair of baskets by senior Danelle Downs, to lead 36-21 at halftime.

Francis Marion held Flagler to 8-of-25 shooting from the field over the opening 20 minutes and to only 31.5 percent for the entire contest.  The Patriots committed a season-low 13 turnovers and outrebounded Flagler 52-38, while leading 19-10 in second-chance points.

FMU began the second stanza with a 12-2 run that included five points from Belcher.  The Patriots' largest lead was 30 points at 64-34 following a layup by Simone Trice with 5:42 remaining.
