FLORENCE, SC - Francis Marion University sophomore midfielder Travis Bally
made the most of 13 minutes on the field as he scored the lone goal
in the 70th minute to lift Francis Marion University to a 1-0 Peach
Belt Conference win over Georgia Southwestern State University,
Saturday afternoon (Sept. 25) in men's college soccer action.
Francis Marion wins its second consecutive match to improve to
2-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the PBC. The Hurricanes drop to
1-6-0 and 0-1-0 with its third 1-0 loss of the season.
The scoreless first half featured few serious scoring
opportunities. FMU freshman forward Alex Blandin
intercepted a throw from GSW goalkeeper David Poreley in the 30th
minute, but Poreley dove back toward his goal to smother Blandin's
shot from 18 yards out.
Patriot sophomore defender Ryan Lucas blasted a
shot from 21 yards out in the 62nd minute, but Poreley leapt and
tipped the ball over the crossbar. Poreley finished with six
saves.
FMU's scoring sequence began with Cameron Mabee
playing the ball wide to Chris Foltanski
on the right side. Foltanski then crossed the ball to Bally
who scored from 13 yards out. It was his first tally in a
Patriot uniform.
Francis Marion outshot the Hurricanes 18-4, and did not allow
GSW a single shot on goal. Thus, FMU senior goalkeeper Clark
Richeson registered no saves en route to his 14th career
shutout.
FMU also led 9-3 in corner kicks. Foltanski led the
Patriots with six shots, three of which were on frame.
Francis Marion will play host to Peach Belt Conference opponent
Lander University on Wednesday at 4 p.m., while Georgia
Southwestern plays at Lander on next Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
