Box Score Wilson, NC - Junior first baseman Preston Shuey and
sophomore outfielder Tyler Boyd each drove in four runs as
seventh-ranked Francis Marion University beat Barton College 16-6,
Thursday afternoon (Feb. 18) in non-conference baseball action.
The Patriots, who win for the sixth straight time, blasted
17 hits.
Senior right-hander Erik Sommerville (2-0), the second of
three Patriot hurlers, earned the win. He allowed five hits
and only one run in six innings, while striking out five.
Seniors Logan Bland and Alex Lee both recorded three hits, with
Lee scoring four times and Bland driving in three. Boyd
plated one run with a bases-loaded walk and drilled a three-run
homer. Shuey drove in his runs with a pair of doubles
and a sacrifice fly.
FMU shortstop Barrett Kleinknecht also had two hits,
and like Boyd, extended his season-long hitting streak to
seven games.
The Patriots scored once in the top of the first, only to have
Barton answer with two in the bottom of the frame. FMU
tallied seven runs in the top of the second, but gave up three runs
in the last of the second to lead 8-5. While Sommerville
silenced the Bulldogs bats, Francis Marion scored once in the
fifth, twice in the sixth, four times in the eighth, and once more
in the ninth.
Francis Marion will host a three-game series this weekend with
seventh-ranked West Chester University (1-0). The squads will
play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game on
Sunday at noon.
