scored seven of his 22 points in the final minute as Francis Marion
University erased a double-digit second-half deficit to claim a
94-91 win over St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Saturday night
(Nov. 20) on the second day of the Zaxby's Tip-Off Clazzic.
Senior guard Chris Hargrove scored 16 of his team-high 18 points
in the second half to help UNC Pembroke take a 72-65
come-from-behind victory over Coker College in the opening game of
the evening. Florence native and Wilson High School product
Shahmel Brackett and K.J. Cooper each added 14 points for UNCP
(3-1), which trailed 58-50 with seven minutes to go. The
Braves broke a 64-64 deadlock with a 12-1 run to end the game.
Senior guard Tom Wright paced Coker with 22 points, while
Florence native and West Florence product Jonathon Gardner scored
17 points and was 5-of-11 from three-point range.
In the FMU contest, junior forward Liki Turner led the
unbeaten Patriots (3-0) with a career-high equaling 24 points and
13 rebounds. He was 7-of-11 from the floor and 10-of-12 at the
free throw line. Senior forward Simel Boyd added 19
points, while senior center David Turner came
off the bench to contribute 11. Greenfield also handed out
nine assists, while committing only one turnover in 31 minutes of
directing the Patriot offense.
Guard Ross Williams led St. Andrews (0-3) with 28 points and
five assists, while Michael Dunkins scored 15, Aaron Christian 14,
and Antonio Moffitt 12.
Francis Marion scored the game's opening eight points and looked
to be on the way to an easy win. However the Knights
responded quickly and knotted the score at 14-14 near the midway
point of the first half. FMU would again expand its lead to
eight points at 33-25 following a layup by Andrew Smith with
4:37 left in the stanza. St. Andrews again rallied and carried a
41-40 advantage into the locker room at intermission.
In the second half, the Knights stretched their advantage to 12
points at 65-53 with 12:01 left. The margin was nine at 71-62
with 8:42 remaining when Boyd sparked a 7-2 spurt that brought the
Patriots to within 73-69. A jumper by Greenfield tied the
contest at 74-74 at the 5:59 mark.
Liki Turner broke a tie and gave FMU the lead for good with
four straight points with just over three minutes
left. Entering the final minute, FMU's lead was 87-86, but
Greenfield scored his seven crucial points to seal the victory.
FMU shot 43.8 percent from the floor, while St. Andrews
connected on 42.6 percent of its field goal attempts. The
Patriots were 23-of-31 at the line (74.2%), while the Knights shot
33-of-45 (73.3%) in game that featured 57 personal fouls.
Francis Marion will play host to Morris College for a
doubleheader with the women's team on Tuesday evening.
