NEWBERRY, SC -- Freshman Shane McConlogue and senior
Ivan Juric each tallied first-half goals and Francis Marion
University forged that early 2-0 advantage into a 2-1
non-conference win over Newberry College, Saturday afternoon (Oct.
9) in men's soccer action.
The Patriots improve to 4-6-1, while Newberry falls to 1-8-2.
Francis Marion will play host to Peach Belt Conference
opponent UNC Pembroke on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
McConlogue scored an unassisted goal in the fifth minute on
a 20-yard shot from the right side. Juric doubled the
margin to 2-0 on a penalty kick at the 18:27 mark.
Newberry scored its lone tally in the 53rd minute on an
unassisted goal by Stephen Harvey.
Newberry outshot the Patriots 16-9, but the FMU defense
allowed only one shot, and it was blocked by a defender, over the
final 14 minutes. Newberry held a 4-2 advantage in corner
kicks.
Francis Marion senior goalkeeper Clark Richeson compiled a
seven saves, while Newberry keepers Patrick Sweatt and Joel
Johnson tallied three and one save respectively.
