FLORENCE, SC — Freshman Zach Shanahan scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick with 1:25 left before halftime as 16th-ranked Flagler College rallied for a 3-1 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 30) in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action.
The loss spoiled Senior Day for the Patriots (7-9-1, 3-5-0) who honored five players prior to kickoff. Francis Marion will be on the road on Tuesday for a first-round match in the PBC Tournament against an opponent yet to be determined.
Flagler improves to 12-3-1 and 6-2-0 with its fifth straight victory.
One of the Patriot seniors, Chris Foltanski, stunned the Saints with a 15th minute goal that put FMU up 1-0. The ball was played out of the back to senior Julian Ramjohn in the midfield. Ramjohn headed up field and chipped the ball across to Foltanski who beat Flagler goalkeeper Matt Gilman with a 15-yard shot at the 14:08 mark. It was the Long Valley, N.J., native's 12th career goal.
Flagler even the score on a 13-yard shot from Joseph Toby at the 31:47 mark. Kevin Keenan and Pol Berenguer both assisted on the score. Toby nearly scored again in the 40th minute, but his redirection of a long-range blast went directly into the hands of FMU senior goalkeeper Clark Richeson.
Following an FMU foul in the 18-yard box in the 44th minute, Shanahan converted the penalty kick to put the Saints up 2-1.
Junior Mack Hough completed the scoring in the 67th minute. The sequence began with a service from Eammon Murphy followed by a very quick cross from Toby that found Hough alone in front of an open goal for an easy 6-yard tap-in shot.
Playing in his final home contest, Richeson made seven saves to run his career total to 311. Gilman and his back-up Aaron Beers did not record any saves as Francis Marion's only shot of the match was Foltanski's score. The Saints totaled 24 shots. FMU did hold a slight 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
In addition to Foltanski, Ramjohn, and Richeson, Patriot seniors Ivan Juric and Justin Kibler both played their final home contest.
