DAHLONEGA, GA – Gray Phelps scored with 3:10 remaining in
the match to give North Georgia College & State University a
1-0 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Oct.
16) in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action.
Francis Marion had won five of its last six matches entering the
key conference contest, but the Patriots drop to 5-7-1 overall and
2-3-0 in the Peach Belt. The Saints move to 7-3-3 and
2-3-1.
Each team took 10 shots in the match and North Georgia held a
5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
FMU senior goalkeeper Clark Richeson registered six saves, while
Kristopher Alonzo made three stops for the Saints.
Stan Soulen slid a pass to Phelps in the 18-yard box and he
maneuvered the ball inside the left post for the only score of the
contest at the 86:50 mark.
Francis Marion's best score opportunity may have come in
the 65th minute when Alex Blandin crossed the ball to Justin Walton
who was streaking down the middle of the field, but his one-touch
shot was partially corralled by Alonzo.
Both senior Ivan Juric and freshman Shane McConlogue had two
shots apiece for the Patriots.
FMU will play host to Lander University on Monday at 4 p.m.
for the program's fifth-annual Passionately Pink for the Cure
Match.
