ROCK HILL, SC - Winthrop University scored once in each half en
route to a 2-0 win over Francis Marion University, Friday night
(Sept. 25) in women's soccer action.
Winthrop (3-4-1) outshot the Patriots 13-8 and led 6-5 in corner
kicks.
Senior midfielder Angela Salem led Francis Marion (1-9-1) with
four shots, one of which was on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Brandenburg recorded eight saves in the
loss, while Eagles' goalkeeper Kelsey Weavil made two stops.
Rachel Webster scored an unassisted goal at the 12:35 mark as
the Eagles took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. The
end of the first half was delayed for nearly an hour due to
lightning near the soccer field.
FMU produced four shots, including attempts by Salem and Taylor
Jenkins that were saved by Weavil, in a three-minute span early in
the second half. Tricia Vensel scored on a 20-yard shot in
the 73rd minute to conclude the scoring.
Francis Marion will play host to Charleston Southern University
on Sunday at 2 p.m.
