HARTSVILLE, SC - Francis Marion University sophomore Adrian
Williams scored in the 53rd minute, but 23rd-ranked Coker College
answered with the tying goal nine minutes later and the two local
rivals settled for a 1-1 tie on Tuesday night (Sept. 22) in
non-conference men's soccer action.
The tie snapped a 13-game winning streak for the Patriots in the
all-time series, which now stands at 20-6-5 in favor of FMU.
For 2009, Francis Marion moves to 4-2-1, while the Cobras remain
unbeaten at 7-0-1.
The first half of the match saw little action, with each team
battling to keep possession for more than a few touches. In the
second half the Patriots were finally able to crack the Cobra
defense when Williams put home a one-timer off a direct
kick from Adrian Sikorski.
Less than 10 minutes later, in the 62nd minute, Coker took
advantage of a direct kick. The Cobras were awarded the kick just
outside the 18-yard box and after placing a shot on frame,
Patriot's goalkeeper Clark Richeson could not corral the ball
and the Cobras Marc Mergena tipped the ball just over the goal line
tying the game at 1-1.
During the next 28 minutes of regulation each team had their
fair share of opportunities to take the lead, including a Chris
Foltanski header that clanged off the post for the Patriots
and an Eric Stiefield shot that also bounced off the post for
the Cobras.
In 20 minutes of overtime, both teams battled back and
forth, but in the end neither team was able to put home the winner.
Coker's goalkeeper James Sweeney had two saves, while FMU's
Richeson had five saves with the Cobras outshooting the Patriots
12-7. Francis Marion played without the services of leading
scorer Kyle Clinton who sat out the match with an injury.
The Patriots will open Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday
with a 3:30 p.m. match at Georgia Southwestern State University.
