FLORENCE, SC - Junior midfielder Chris
Foltanski headed in the rebound of a shot off the crossbar with
19:59 remaining to lift Francis Marion University to a 2-1 win over
Mount Olive College, Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 16) in
non-conference men's soccer action.
Francis Marion improves to 4-2-0 and remains unbeaten in its
last eight home matches, while the Trojans fall to 3-2-0.
Foltanski's game-winning score came after forward Kyle Clinton
ripped a shot from 15-yards out that squarely met the
crossbar. The ball rebounded to Foltanski who headed the ball
over the outstretched arms of Mount Olive goalkeeper Zac
Scott. It was Foltanski's second tally of 2009, and his third
match-winner in four career scores.
Sophomore Adrian Sikorski gave FMU a 1-0 advantage in the 11th
minute when he took a pass from Ivan Juric and scored on a 10-yard
shot. Mount Olive knotted the score at 1-1 when freshman
Matthew Cargile scored on a 7-yard shot into an open net.
Passes from Vincent Fluellen and Murilo Pelegrino assisted on the
goal and helped the Trojans elude Patriot goalkeeper Clark Richeson
during the sequence.
Cargile got behind the Francis Marion defense in the 79th
minute, but his quick shot on a first-touch sailed well over the
crossbar. Richeson caught a header by Mount Olive's Scott
Mitchell with 25 seconds left to preserve the win.
Francis Marion outshot Mount Olive 17-12 and led 8-6 in corner
kicks.
Richeson registered seven saves, while Scott made five stops for
the Trojans.
Francis Marion will open Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday
with a 7:30 p.m. road match at Clayton State University.
Mount Olive plays host to Belmont Abbey College on Saturday at 4
p.m.
