Foltanski's first-half tallies lift FMU past Newberry 4-0

FLORENCE, SC - Junior midfielder Chris Foltanski scored twice and assisted on a third goal to carry Francis Marion University to a 4-0 blanking of Newberry College, Friday afternoon (Oct. 9) in non-conference men's soccer action.

Francis Marion improves to 6-3-2 and wins for the ninth time in 10 all-time meetings with Newberry (1-10-2).

The Patriots scored all four goals in the opening 37 minutes.  Junior forward Juan Rivas scored the opening goal in the 13th minute on a 9-yard shot following a pass from Foltanski.

Foltanski upped the margin to 2-0 with an unassisted goal at the 24:43 mark.  He converted a 15-yard shot after making a long run with the ball.

Sophomore defender Adrian Williams scored FMU's third goal at 34:03.  His short 3-yard shot from the left side followed a corner kick by Cameron Mabee and a deflection by Kyle Clinton.

Foltanksi, a native of Long Valley, N.J., accounted for the final tally with a 10-yard shot in the 37th minute.  The score came after Julian Ramjohn's throw-in found Rivas streaking down the right sideline and then he cross the ball to Foltanski.

Francis Marion outshot Newberry 12-10 and led 6-5 in corner kicks.  Newberry's best scoring opportunity came in the 66th minute when sophomore Tornubari Nyonebue avoided FMU junior goalkeeper Clark Richeson in the box but then watched his 11-yard shot drifted just outside the right post.

Richeson and senior Jeremy Crooks combined on the shutout, the Patriots' fourth of the season.  Richeson made four saves in the first 75:30, while Crooks registered one stop in his 14:30 in goal.

Newberry freshman goalkeeper Joel Johnson recorded four saves before being relieved by Pedro Velazquez (one save) in the 76th minute.

Francis Marion will return to Peach Belt Conference action on Sunday when the Patriots play at Clayton State University at 4 p.m.  Newberry will play at Catawba College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
