ST. AUGUSTINE, FL - Flagler College took a 2-0 lead early in the
second half and rode that advantage to a 3-1 win over Francis
Marion University, Saturday night (Oct. 31) in Peach Belt
Conference men's soccer action.
The Patriots lose for only the second time in their past
15 PBC matches and finish the regular season 11-4-3 overall
and 4-2-2 in the conference. FMU finishes fifth in the
standings and must travel to face the University of Montevallo in a
first-round match of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on
Tuesday.
Flagler (12-5-1, 7-1-0) wins the PBC regular-season title
in its first year in the league.
Flagler took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute
when Pol Berenguer converted a penalty kick, only the
second one the Patriots have allowed all season.
The margin grew to 2-0 when Johan Bergfeld scored only
1:15 into the second half. Francis Marion trimmed the margin
to 2-1 when junior Chris Foltanski off an assist from
Julian Ramjohn at 53:28.
Flagler added an insurance goal in the 81st minute as
Greg Taafe scored on a header.
Flagler outshot the Patriots 18-6 and held a 4-2 advantage
in corner kicks. FMU junior goalkeeper
Clark Richeson made four saves in the loss. It marks the
first time FMU has allowed three goals in a match this season,
and the three scores exceed the total given up by the Patriot
defense in the past seven contests (two goals).
