MORROW, GA - Defense was the name of the game on Sunday evening
as Francis Marion University and Clayton State University battled
to a 0-0 tie in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action at
Laker Field.
Francis Marion moves to 5-3-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the PBC. The
tie ended a three-game winning streak for the Lakers (7-4-1, 3-1-1
PBC). It is the third straight season that a Clayton
State-Francis Marion game has ended in an overtime tie.
The Lakers outshot Francis Marion 23-7. However, Francis
Marion recorded the only three shots of the final 10-minute
overtime period.
The Patriots also received strong play in the net by junior
goalkeeper Clark Richeson, who recorded 12 saves.
In the 70th minute, Clayton State forward Matthias Faublas
dribbled the ball through the left wing of the penalty box, and
appeared to score the first goal for the Lakers. However, the ball
went over the end line before Faublas took the shot. In the
waning seconds, Faublas sent a perfect left cross to a waiting
Alargie Jobe for a sure header, but Richeson was alert and
corralled the save with 10 seconds remaining.
Both Kyle Clinton and Juan Rivas recorded three shots apiece for
FMU. Laker goalkeeper David Cristofoli recorded four saves
for his conference-leading seventh shutout on the season.
Francis Marion plays host to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
