FLORENCE, SC - Junior forward Junior Nyemb scored the second of
his two goals with 21:12 left in the match to give Wingate
University a 3-2 victory over Francis Marion University, Tuesday
afternoon (Sept. 16) in men's non-conference soccer action.
FMU (1-4-1) will open its Peach Belt Conference schedule on
Saturday when the Patriots entertain Clayton State University at 4
p.m. Wingate (5-1-0) hosts Lander University on Sunday at 2
p.m.
Nyemb's goal came after FMU freshman Adrian Sikorski had tied
the match at 2-2 with his first career score, only five minutes
into the second half. Ivan Juric assisted on Sikorski's
tally.
Wingate forward Sandre' Wilson opened an eventful first 16
minutes that saw three goals scored, when he took a pass from Adam
Cunningham and found the back of the net at the 12:08 mark.
Nyemb then doubled the margin to 2-0 when he scored off an
assist from Jonathan Ebanks at 14:28. Only 1:18 later, Juric
cut the deficit to 2-1 with his third goal of 2008. FMU
senior Willie Hunt assisted on the score. Wingate led 2-1 at
intermission.
After Sikorski tied the score, Nyemb scored the match-winner on
an assist from Luke Mulholland at 68:48. Nyemb leads the
Bulldogs with seven goals this season.
Francis Marion had several opportunities to force overtime in
the final minutes. With five minutes left, Sikorski's cross
from the right side went through the hands of Wingate goalkeeper
Joey Calandra, but FMU forward Juan Rivas was unable to steer the
ball into the open net. Juric then hit a shot from the top of
the box that glanced off the crossbar with two minutes remaining.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Clark Richeson and Calandra both
finished with three saves apiece. Francis Marion outshot the
Bulldogs 11-7 and led 6-1 in corner kicks.
