PEMBROKE, NC - A balanced hitting attack paced Francis Marion
University to a three-set sweep (25-14, 25-17, 25-22) of UNC
Pembroke on Friday night (Nov. 7) spoiling the Braves' Senior
Night.
Francis Marion ends its regular season with a 22-7 overall mark,
the second-highest winning percentage for an FMU squad over the
past 10 seasons. The Patriots also finish Peach Belt
Conference play with a 7-3 mark and could finish first, second, or
third depending on Saturday's matches.
UNCP (12-18, 2-8 PBC) could not get its offense on track in the
first two sets managing only 14 kills over the first two frames
compared to 24 for FMU. A resurgent Braves squad took an early lead
in the third set, but costly errors gave FMU the set and match in
three.
FMU freshman Amanda Mitchell tallied nine kills and three
blocks, while senior Jessica Lombardi had eight kills and eight
digs. Senior setter Jenna Kaiser racked up 31 assists in directing
the Patriots' offense, while freshman Hallie Legg totaled a
team-high 12 digs.
UNCP freshman Allie Schneider tallied nine kills and a
match-high 14 digs for the Braves and Rachel Young earned six
blocks. Kayla Marbert and Whitney Hanlin recorded 13 and 12
assists respectively for the Braves and Caitlin Haworth added 10
digs.
Both teams will next be in action next Saturday when UNCP plays
hosts to the 2008 PBC Tournament.
