FLORENCE, S.C. - Freshman forward Amanda Hall scored in the 28th
minute for her second match-winning goal in as many contests as
Francis Marion University edged Winthrop University 1-0, Wednesday
afternoon (Oct. 8) in non-conference women's soccer action.
Francis Marion picks up its second straight win and improves to
2-10-1.Winthrop suffers its fourth consecutive shutout and drops to
4-8-0.
Hall scored the match's lone goal when she took a pass from
junior midfielder Angela Salem and put a 9-yard shot from the left
side past Winthrop goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil, who had charged out at
the FMU forward. For Hall, a native of Anchorage, Alaska, it
was her team-leading third score of the season, while Salem leads
the Patriots with four assists.
Francis Marion freshman goalkeeper Casey Durham made a
career-high eight saves en route to her first career shutout.
Weavil, subbing for an ailing Dimitra Poulos, registered five
saves.
Winthrop outshot the Patriots 14-13, and led 8-6 in
shots-on-goal. FMU held a slight 4-3 advantage in corner
kicks.
Durham's biggest stop of the afternoon came in the 19th minute
when she deflected a shot by Erin Foote. Foote's shot came
after the Eagles were awarded an indirect kick just outside the box
due to an obstruction call against an FMU defender.
Weavil kept the Eagles within one goal by stopping a shot by FMU
sophomore forward Nina Connell, who had gotten through the Winthrop
defense in the 74th minute. Winthrop had one final
opportunity to force overtime in the final seconds, but Durham
easily caught a long 25-yard shot by Christine Isabella.
"I am very proud of our squad for getting its first shutout of
2008 against a quality opponent," said FMU head coach Marty
Beall. "We are steadily improving, and the work rate of the
players has been very good. Angela (Salem) continues to be
the driving force for us on the field. Casey (Durham) played
well in goal and came up with some key saves, including two on set
pieces."
Francis Marion is off until making it's first-ever trip to the
Midwest where the Patriots will play at Missouri on Oct. 17 and at
Kansas on Oct. 19, both of whom were among the other schools
receiving votes in this week's NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll.
Winthrop will play host to Presbyterian College on Saturday at 7
p.m.
