SALISBURY, NC - Francis Marion University received goals from
four different players and the Patriots stretched their unbeaten
streak to 11 matches with a 4-2 victory over Catawba College,
Tuesday evening (Oct. 28) in non-conference men's soccer action.
Francis Marion (10-4-3) has nine wins and two ties in its last
11 matches, the team's longest streak since a 12-match winning
streak in 2002. FMU also reaches double-digit wins for the
ninth time in the program's 34-year history, and the first time
since 2002.
Francis Marion will conclude its regular season with Senior Day
on Saturday when the Patriots play host to Lander University at
2:30 p.m. That match will also decide the Peach Belt
Conference regular-season champion as the two squads are tied for
the conference lead with just one match left to play.
Junior Kyle Clinton gave the Patriots a 1-0 advantage when he
converted a penalty kick at the 13:16 mark. After Catawba
tied the match in the 31st minute, junior midfielder Jared
Beauchamp put the Patriots ahead for good with a score at
34:35. Sophomore Juan Rivas assisted on the go-ahead tally.
The two teams remained scoreless for the opening 36 minutes of
the second stanza before combining for an eventful final nine
minutes.
Sophomore Ivan Juric scored his seventh goal of 2008, thanks to
another Rivas assist, to put Francis Marion up 3-1 with 8:41
remaining. But Catawba answered with a goal only 31 seconds
later to again trim the margin to one goal at 3-2. However,
Patriot freshman Adrian Sikorski scored an unassisted and insurance
goal at 84:48 to give the Patriots a two-goal margin (4-2).
The Patriots outshot the Indians 24-5 and led 8-3 in corner
kicks.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Clark Richeson also upped his personal
record to 10-4-3 while making just one save.
