Clinton's goal beats buzzer as FMU downs Saints 2-1

DAHLONEGA, GA - Junior midfielder Kyle Clinton scored with one second remaining in the second overtime period to give Francis Marion University a dramatic 2-1 victory over North Georgia College & State University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 25) in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action.

The Patriots captured their second straight 2-1 overtime win to push their unbeaten streak to 10 matches (8 wins, 2 ties), the team's longest since a 12-match winning streak in 2002.  FMU (9-4-3, 4-0-1) moves into temporary possession of first place in the PBC standings, hinging on other conference action later on Saturday.

With about 10 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, Clinton broke free and dribbled toward Saints' goalkeeper Rade Tanaskovic who came out and got a hand on the ball, but Clinton was able to get off a shot that crossed the goal line with one tick remaining.  Sophomore Ivan Juric assisted on the score.

North Georgia (6-10-1, 1-3-1 PBC) took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when Avram Allen scored. The Saints' Bradley Rose dribbled out of trouble and set a liner that was deflected by Terry Gibbs, giving Allen a clear shot and he sent a laser inside the left goal post.

That 1-0 advantage would stand until the 59th minute. Francis Marion freshman defender Adrian Williams sent a shot past Tanaskovic at the 58:31 mark to even the score at 1-1.  The Patriots would register 10 shots over the next 31 minutes (to North Georgia's one) but could not push across the winner in regulation.

Francis Marion led in shots 21-10 and held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks. Patriot sophomore goalkeeper Clark Richeson tallied six saves, while Tanaskovic saved three shots.  Two of Richeson's saves came in the second overtime prior to Clinton's match-winning play.

Francis Marion will play at Catawba College on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
