FLORENCE, SC - Reserve freshman back Sawyer Frank scored once
and assisted on two other second-half scores to help rally Francis
Marion University to a 5-2 come-from-behind win over an
upset-minded Barton College squad, Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 14) in
non-conference men's soccer action.
The match was the FMU program's third-annual Passionately Pink
for the Cure event to bring awareness to and help fight breast
cancer.
With the victory, Francis Marion pushes its unbeaten streak to
seven matches - five wins and two double-overtime ties - and ups
its overall mark to 6-4-3. The six wins exceed last year's
win total (5-12-1). Barton drops its sixth consecutive match
to fall to 1-12-0.
Only 1:06 into the contest, FMU junior Kyle Clinton put the
Patriots on the board with an 8-yard shot. His goal came
after Barton goalkeeper Brian Riesenberg failed to cover a corner
kick by Juan Rivas.
However, the Bulldogs answered in the ninth minute when Matthew
Arnold headed in a corner kick by Kieran McGurk. That score
tied the match at 1-1 and snapped the Patriots' school-record
scoreless streak at 509:12.
After the fast start, neither team scored over the half's final
36 minutes and the score remained 1-1 through intermission.
Barton junior Chris Tripp scored his team-leading fourth goal at
51:24 to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage. He took a cross
from Arnold and knocked in a 13-yard shot.
Frank then reentered the match in the 52nd minute and the
Patriots began their comeback. Clinton netted his second goal
of the contest at 54:09 to tie the score at 2-2. He received
a pass from Frank and blasted in a 19-yard shot from the top of the
box.
Frank then fed Chris Foltanski for a 10-yard shot in the 65th
minute that gave Francis Marion a 3-2 advantage. At the 76:01
mark, sophomore Ivan Juric took a cross from freshman Adam Dillihay
and scored on a 15-yard shot from the left side to put the Patriots
up 4-2. It was Juric's team-leading sixth score of 2008.
Frank concluded the scoring with a 5-yard chip shot at 80:54
that was assisted by Juric.
Francis Marion outshot Barton 18-10 and led 12-4 in
shots-on-goal and 8-3 in corner kicks. The Patriots have
allowed only 13 shots-on-goal over their past four matches.
Francis Marion sophomore goalkeeper Clark Richeson recorded two
saves, but also saw his school-record scoreless streak stopped at
481:05.
Riesenberg registered six saves in the opening 80 minutes before
being relieved by Josh Cooper, who allowed one goal and made one
save over the final 10 minutes.
FMU will now take to the road for four straight matches
beginning with a 7 p.m. contest at Mount Olive College on Friday
evening. Barton plays at Queens University of Charlotte on
Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
