Deon Edwards, a native of Florence, was hired as Director of Sports Performance in August 2021.
Edwards was recently honored when the FMU strength and conditioning staff was selected as the inaugural Conference Carolinas Strength and Conditioning Staff of the Year for the 2024-25 academic year.
A graduate of South Florence High School, where he was a three-sport athlete, Edwards attended Charleston Southern University for one year before transferring to Coastal Carolina University where he earned a B.S. degree in exercise and sport science in 2016. He later received a M.S. degree in applied sports nutrition from Concordia University of Chicago in 2020.
Before joining the Patriot staff, Coach Edwards was at the University of Delaware where he worked directly with both basketball programs along side the Director of Basketball Strength and Conditioning, and with the football and men's and women's soccer teams. He spent one year as Associate Director of Sports Performance at Newberry College, where he worked directly with all 30 varsity sports. Prior to that, he was the Assistant Director of Speed Strength and Conditioning at Coastal Carolina and worked with football, soccer, tennis, and basketball.
He began his professional career at Muhlenberg College in 2017.
He holds current certifications as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
