Carlos Ortiz begins his first season as a volunteer assistant coach at Francis Marion University.
He spent last season as an assistant coach with the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros of the USL Championship, while also serving as a volunteer assistant with the men's program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
Ortiz previously coached two seasons as an assistant at his alma mater Graceland University and two years at Seton Hall University.
Ortiz graduated from Graceland in 2010 with a B.S. degree in physical education and health. He was a three-year starter, a two-time defensive MVP, an All-American, and an All-HAAC goalkeeper for Graceland. In 2006, Ortiz was the starting goalie for a 18-4-2 Yellowjackets squad that won the NAIA national championship.
He later received his M.S. degree in sport psychology and physical activity from the University of Thessaly.
Aside from his experience at Graceland, he played professionally for Salt Lake City (2009) in the MLS, Costa Rica Club Brujas First Division (2010), Club Deportivo Barrio Mexico First Division (2011), and Clarence United First Division team in Tasmania (2012).
After his playing career, he served as an assistant coach of AOT Trikala 2011, a women's second-division team in Greece.
A native of Bogota, Colombia, Ortiz is the youngest of 13 siblings and is trilingual speaking Spanish, English and Greek.
