Francis Marion University senior defender
David Guevara has been named the Conference Carolinas men's soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 8-14.
A native of Guayaquil, Ecuador, Guevara started and played all 90 minutes in the Patriots' lone action last week, a 1-1 tie with Chowan University. The two squads met in last year's Conference Carolinas Tournament final, and were picked first (FMU) and second (Chowan) in this year's preseason coaches' poll.
Guevara recorded a team save in the 27th minute when he headed a Chowan shot away from an open goal. He helped lead the Francis Marion defense that allowed only six shots in the contest.
He has started 39 of FMU's 41 matches during his three seasons in Florence, and last year earned United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region Team (third team) honors and third-team All-Conference recognition.
As a finance major, Guevara has also excelled in the classroom, gaining CSC Academic All-District Team recognition in 2024 and having been inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma national college athlete honor society. He earned a Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award for both 2025 and 2024 and has been placed on the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll four times and the Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll three times.
FMU will play a pair of conference road matches this week: Wednesday (Sept. 17) at 7 p.m. at the University of Mount Olive and Saturday (Sept. 20) at 5:30 p.m. at Ferrum College.
Guevara is a graduate of Unidad Educativa Particular Javier.
