Miller muscles Patriots by Bobcats twice

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA –  Junior catcher Kendal Miller registered six hits and drove in four runs to power 14th-ranked Francis Marion University to a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Georgia College on Wednesday (Feb. 5) with the Patriots winning game-one 12-1 in five innings and game two by a 4-2 decision.

Francis Marion, now 4-0, will host Augusta University for a twinbill on Saturday at 1 p.m.  Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students with FMU students admitted free with identification.

Junior left-hander Alyssa Poston (2-0), this week's Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Week, earned the opening-game win with a one-hitter.  She allowed only a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first, while striking out nine.

Miller had four hits, including a double, while driving in three runs.  Junior right fielder Paige Strickland homered, tripled, and drove in four runs, while junior first baseman Tallulah Civoniceva belted a two-run homer.  Freshman designated player Rylee Gray added a two-run single as FMU pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of seven walks.

Tiffany Caban (1-1) took the game-one loss.

In the second game, Francis Marion scored four times over the first three innings and junior righty Jenna Walling (2-0) made those tallies stand up.  Walling allowed only three hits, while fanning eight.

Senior third baseman Peyton Gale plated the first run with a sacrifice fly in the opening frame.  Junior shortstop Madalyn White laced a two-out, two-run single up the middle to expand the margin to 3-0 in the second inning. Miller accounted for the final run with a solo homer to left-center field in the third.

Both White and Miller finished the second game with two hits.

The Bobcats' only runs came on a two-out, two-run homer by second baseman Divina Checo in the bottom of the seventh.

Shelby Jones (0-1) was the losing pitcher in the second contest.
