WINGATE, NC - Senior second baseman
Megan Matsil went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to power Francis Marion University to a 5-3 win over Carson-Newman University, Friday afternoon (May 12) in an elimination game of the NCAA Division II Southeast Sub-Regional Softball Tournament.

FMU improves to 42-12, tying the school record for wins in a season, and advances to face second-seeded and 17th-ranked Wingate University at 3:55 p.m. on Friday in another elimination contest.

With her three hits, Matsil's sets a new program single record for hits with 79.

Senior right-hander
Rachel Davis (19-9) earned the complete-game victory. She allowed eight hits and struck out three, while walking no one.

Patriot freshman third baseman
Madalyn White had two hits and junior shortstop
Makayla Cuthbertson had a hit and two runs scored. Senior designated player
Savana Rosson reached base all three times she came to the plate with a walk and two hit-by-pitches.

Matsil gave FMU a 2-0 advantage with a two-run double to left center field in the bottom of the third. That margin doubled to 4-0 in the fifth. Cuthbertson slapped an infield single to third base, stole second, and went to third on a sacrifice bunt. She then scored on a wild pitch, and later in the frame Matsil drilled a run-scoring double down the left field line.

FMU senior first baseman
Taylor Watford doubled home an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning after the Eagles had drawn to within 4-3 on a three-run homer by third baseman Brooke Matyasorsky in the top of the sixth.
