White's walk-off hit gives FMU 2-1 win over #9 Panthers

FLORENCE, SC - Freshman shortstop Madalyn White drilled a walk-off RBI-single to left-center field with one out in the bottom of the seventh to lift Francis Marion University to a 2-1 win over ninth-ranked Adelphi University, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 19) on the second day of the Patriot Invitational Softball Tournament.

Francis Marion (9-2) will play 17th-ranked Kutztown University later on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Senior second baseman Megan Matsil led the Patriots at the plate with a 3-for-3 day, while sophomore center fielder Avery Bellai went 2-for-3 and scored the winning run.

Adelphi (2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when center fielder Ziara Shreter singled with two outs, stole second base, and came home on a line drive double down the left field line by left fielder Courtney Wengryn. 

FMU answered back in the bottom of the frame when senior left fielder Danielle Karacson launched her third home run of the season, a two-out solo shot over the left-center field fence.

The game stayed knotted until the last of the seventh.  Bellai led off with a single that fell in front of the Shreter.  She moved to second on a ground out and came home with the winning run as White lined her walk-off single to left center.

FMU freshman right-hander Jenna Walling improved her record to 6-0 as she allowed only three hits, the one run, and no walks while striking out three.

Adelphi sophomore righty Brianna Pearson (0-1) took the loss in relief.
