HARTSVILLE, SC – Francis Marion University captured three hard-fought wins in doubles play and then was victorious in five of six singles contests to record a 6-1 win over local-rival Coker University, Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 23) in men's tennis action.
Francis Marion ups its season record to 4-2. The Patriots will play their next three matches at home beginning with a 3 p.m. contest against Tiffin University of Ohio on Tuesday.
The doubles matches finished in order with FMU sophomores
Liam Day and
Leonel Gonzalez winning 6-4 at No.1, freshmen
Martin Barbera and
Harri Lloyd-Evans winning 7-5 at No.2, and sophomore
Adam Ernberg and freshman
Luis Lopez Sarasa winning 6-4 at No.3.
Victories at the top two singles positions gave FMU a 3-0 advantage as Day won 6-1, 6-4 at No.1 and Lloyd-Evans (7-5, 6-2) at No.2. After the Cobras drew to within 3-1 with a win at No.3 singles, Lopez Sarasa clinched the match for FMU with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No.5 spot.
Barbera also won his match at No.4 (6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8)) and Ernberg at No.6 (6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7)) to account for the final score.
Day and Gonzalez remain unbeaten on the season (5-0) in doubles action, while in singles play Lloyd-Evans is 5-0 and Day is 4-1.
