Patriots drop pair at Saint Leo Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAINT LEO, FL – Francis Marion University came up on the short end of two games on Sunday (March 9) at the Saint Leo Softball Spring Invitational.  Palm Beach Atlantic University rallied for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to wipe out a 6-2 FMU lead and send the Patriots to an 8-6 defeat in the squad's first game on Sunday.  Host Saint Leo University then held off a late Francis Marion rally to claim a 4-2 victory later in the day.

Francis Marion (10-10) will play a twinbill at Lenoir-Rhyne University on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

In Sunday's opener, FMU built a 5-0 lead heading into the last of the fifth.  The Sailfish scored twice, but Francis Marion answered with a single run in the top of the sixth to lead 6-2.  However, PBAU used five hits, four walks, two passed balls, and an error to plate six runs and grab the 8-6 advantage.

FMU did get the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but could not rally.

Junior righty Katie Carnes (5-4) was the losing pitcher as she allowed four runs in the sixth after relieving starter Taylor Luff.

FMU freshman right fielder Briana Barzola, junior third baseman Shelby Mathews, and sophomore center fielder Jessie Sims all registered two hits against the Sailfish.  Freshman left fielder Mikala Barnhart delivered a two-run single, while Mathews, Luff, and Carnes also recorded RBIs.

In FMU's second game of the day, Saint Leo scored three times in the bottom of the second frame to take the early lead.  The Patriots trimmed the margin to 3-1 on an RBI ground out by Luff in the top of the fifth.

Francis Marion left two runners on base in scoring position in the top of the sixth inning and the Lions promptly added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame to lead 4-1.  FMU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with only one out, but could only manage a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Kristie Hanewinckel to produce the 4-2 final.

Luff (5-6) registered the complete-game against Saint Leo, allowing four runs (all earned) on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Patriots were held to three singles by three Saint Leo hurlers.  The hits were recorded by Hanewinckel, Carnes, and freshman catcher Danielle Myers.
