Patriot bats silenced by Bears

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HICKORY, NC – The Francis Marion University softball team was held to five hits on Wednesday (March 12) as the Patriots dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Lenoir-Rhyne University by scores of 1-0 and 4-0.

Francis Marion (10-12) will open Peach Belt Conference play this weekend with a road doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern State University, Saturday at noon.  FMU will then play a twinbill at Columbus State University on Sunday at noon.

Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 18-5.

FMU senior right-hander Taylor Luff (5-7) was the tough-luck loser in the game one. Luff struck out 11 LRU batters and allowed only four hits, but one of them was a solo homer by shortstop Jody Mizelle to lead off the third inning.

Francis Marion put runners on first and second with only one out in both the third and fifth frames, but was unable to push across a run.

Junior righty Katie Carnes (5-5) took the loss in the second contest.  She allowed six hits and three earned runs, while fanning five.  Lenoir-Rhyne scored a pair of runs in both the third and fifth innings.

With the score still tied 0-0 in the top of the third, FMU sophomore center fielder Jessie Sims walked and freshman right fielder Briana Barzola legged out an infield single to put two Patriot runners on base with only one out.  However, senior shortstop Kristie Hanewinckel lined into a double play to end the threat.

FMU junior third baseman Shelby Mathews doubled to lead off the fourth inning, but pinch runner Mikala Barnhart was later stranded at third.  The Patriots also put two runners on base in the seventh inning, but could not produce a run-scoring hit.

Barzola was the lone Patriot to record a hit in each game.
