Hanewinckel's sac fly gives Patriots split at UMO

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MOUNT OLIVE, NC – Senior shortstop Kristie Hanewinckel lifted a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the seventh inning to plate the winning run as Francis Marion University defeated the University of Mount Olive 6-5 and earned a split of a Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 26) non-conference softball doubleheader. Mount Olive won the opener 3-2.

With the split, Francis Marion's record is now 8-6.  The Patriots will play a doubleheader at North Greenville University on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

In the opener, FMU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  Junior third baseman Shelby Mathews laced a two-out run-scoring double into the right centerfield gap to score Hanewinckel, who had walked.

Mount Olive plated all three of its runs in the bottom of the third inning on back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles by Beth Overman, Katie Moore, and Tiffany Hawley.

The Patriots crept to within 3-2 in the fourth when junior first baseman Ashley Burney doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and came across to score on an RBI groundout by sophomore outfielder Jessie Sims.

Hanewinckel doubled with one out in the fifth, but was stranded on third.  Mount Olive starter Lauren Smith (3-3) retired the final eight batters in order to cap a four-hitter.

Patriot senior right-hander Taylor Luff (3-4) absorbed the loss despite allowing only six hits and striking out eight.

In the second game, sophomore catcher Taylor Barrineau gave the Patriots a 2-0 lead with a second-inning homer.  The Trojans responded with three unanswered runs to take a 3-2 lead after four frames.

FMU scored three times in the top of the fifth to retake the lead. Sims singled in one run and then stole second base forcing an errant throw by the Mount Olive catcher that allowed a second run to cross home plate.  Sims gave the Patriots a 5-3 advantage when she scored on an RBI single to left by Hanewinckel.

Mount Olive rallied with two runs in the last to the sixth to knot the score at 5-5.  In the top of the seventh, FMU senior second baseman Lindsey Brown reached on an error by the Trojans' shortstop.  Brown stole second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.  Hanewinckel then drove her in with the sacrifice fly.

Patriot junior righty Katie Carnes (5-2) picked up the win as she scattered nine hits and fanned five.  Two of the runs she allowed were unearned.

Hanewinckel, Mathews, and freshman outfielder TJ Fain all had two hits apiece in the second contest.
