Patriot softball splits DH with Wolves

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FLORENCE, SC  – Senior shortstop Kristie Hanewinckel went 4-for-4 with a home run as Francis Marion University beat Newberry College 7-3 and earned a split of a Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 19) non-conference softball doubleheader.  The Wolves scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally for a 4-3 victory in the opener.

Francis Marion (5-3) will entertain Mars Hill University for a twinbill on Saturday at 1 p.m. as the Patriots celebrate Homecoming 2014.  FMU will then play host to 24th-ranked Wingate University on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Hanewinckel also scored three runs in game two, while junior third baseman Shelby Mathews and sophomore catcher Taylor Barrineau each registered two hits and two RBIs.

Junior right-hander Katie Carnes (2-2) earned the win for FMU as the Pageland native struck out eight and allowed only one earned run on five hits.

Newberry reliever Hannah Blakley (1-1) was tagged with the loss as FMU scored a combined five times over the third and fourth innings.

Francis Marion senior right-hander Taylor Luff (3-1) suffered the game-one loss as two throwing errors in the seventh inning set the table for a two-run double by Newberry center fielder Gabby Bedard.

FMU put two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but pinch runner Briana Barzola was thrown out trying to score on senior right fielder Olivia Zielinski's single through the right side.

Junior first baseman Ashley Burney led FMU at the plate in game one with two hits and a run batted in.  Luff had one hit at the plate and struck out eight Newberry batters, while allowing seven hits.

FMU plated all three runs of its runs in the bottom of the third.  The first run crossed home on a throwing error and the second scampered home on a sacrifice fly by designated player Danielle Myers.  Burney plated the third tally with a double down the left field line.

Newberry (8-3) answered with two runs in the fourth on a two-single by right fielder Ashlen Ayres. These were the first runs Luff had allowed all season.

Newberry reliever Madison Burnett (3-1) picked up the win with four scoreless innings.
