Patriot Softball drops pair to Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Flagler College swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from Francis Marion University, 2-1 in a 9-inning first game and 8-3 in the second game, Sunday afternoon (April 7) at Flagler Field.

Francis Marion falls to 24-24 overall and 8-12 in conference play, while Flagler extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 29-15 overall and 10-8 in the Peach Belt.

The Patriots will conclude their 2013 regular-season schedule with a PBC doubleheader at UNC Pembroke on Thursday at 4 p.m.

In the opener, Christen Moon hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Whitney Little from second base with the winning run. Little led off the frame by reaching first on a dribbler up the third base line that she beat out. After stealing second, Little scored on Moon's hit.

After Malloree Escue got the Saints on the board first with an RBI-single in the fifth, FMU senior third baseman Tristan Faile evened the score with a lead-off home run in the top of the sixth, her fifth long ball of the season.

Kalyn Loverich (13-6) won the pitcher's duel as she scattered five hits, allowed one run, walked three and struck out six batters. She retired nine of the first 10 batters she faced, and the final 10 in order.

Junior right-hander Taylor Luff (13-13) was the hard-luck loser in game one. She went the distance and scattered seven hits, allowed two runs, walked eight and struck out eight.

Flagler stranded 13 runners while Francis Marion left eight on base.

In the second contest, the Saints jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after scoring solo runs in each of the first three innings. The breakout inning was the fifth where Flagler sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on four hits.  

FMU junior righty Danielle Payne (6-10) pitched 4.1 innings, surrendered eight hits, six earned runs, walked three, and struck out five.

Faile was 3-for-3 and drove in a run for Francis Marion. Senior catcher Olivia Ferguson singled twice, scored a run, and had an RBI.

Katie Enright (12-6) earned the win for the Saints as she tossed a complete game, scattered seven hits, and allowed two earned runs.
