Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, GA – Francis Marion University jumped out to early leads in both games of Saturday's (March 16) Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader at Augusta State University, but the 22nd-ranked Patriots were unable to hold those advantages and lost twice, 6-1 and 7-5.
Francis Marion falls to 19-11 overall and 5-5 in the PBC, while the Jaguars improve to 10-16 and 4-2.
FMU will play host to Lenoir-Rhyne University for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
In game one, the Patriots scored in the opening frame on a two-out RBI double by senior catcher Olivia Ferguson. The Jaguars answered with two-run innings in the third, fourth, and fifth frames.
FMU junior right-hander Taylor Luff (10-7) suffered the loss as she allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits in 4.2 innings.
Right fielder Lauren Yeargan paced ASU with a 2-for-3 game that included a two-run double and a two-run homer. Kristen Mills (6-0) remained unbeaten with a complete-game effort that saw her surrender five hits, while fanning five.
In the second contest, again the Patriot scored in the top of the first. Luff reached on an error and came around to score on three passed balls. The lead was extended to 3-0 in the top of the third, thanks to an RBI grounder by Kristie Hanewinckel and a sacrifice fly by Ferguson.
ASU rallied by scoring seven runs over the next three frames.
Luff was 2-for-4 with three runs scored in game two, while Ferguson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and junior outfielder Megan Smith had a solo home run. Senior Tristan Faile registered a double in each game of the twinbill.
Junior righty Danielle Payne (4-3) took the game-two loss, as she allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits in five innings. Haley Birkle recorded the complete-game win by tossing a five-hitter.
