FLORENCE, NC – Both Francis Marion University and Mount Olive College each scored seven runs, rapped out nine hits, and committed two errors as the two teams traded 5-2 decisions in splitting Saturday afternoon's (Feb. 9) non-conference softball doubleheader.

Francis Marion moves to 6-2 on the season and will travel to Pembroke, N.C., to participate in the UNCP Invitational on Sunday.  FMU will face Kutztown University at 11 a.m. and Fayetteville State University at 3:30 p.m.

Junior FMU right-hander Taylor Luff (4-1) tossed a four-hitter in game one and also scored twice from the lead-off spot in the lineup as the Patriots won the opener 5-2.  She struck out 12 and walked only one.

Sophomore first baseman Carly Madigan gave the Patriots a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first with a two-run single to right center field.  After the Trojans trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth, Francis Marion responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame.  Madigan plated one run with an RBI groundout, while senior third baseman Tristan Faile followed with a two-run single up the middle.

Faile finished game one 2-for-3, while junior second baseman Kristie Hanewinckel was 2-for-2.

In the second game, FMU again took a 2-0 advantage in the opening frame.  Senior catcher Olivia Ferguson scored Luff with a sacrifice fly to center and Madigan followed with a sacrifice fly to center that plated Hanewinckel.

Mount Olive knotted the score with two runs in the third, and then scored three times against Luff in the sixth frame.  Luff had relieved FMU starter Katie Carnes, who allowed two runs on two hits in 4.1 innings.

Luff, Hanewinckel, and Faile had the three FMU hits in game two.

Mount Olive shortstop Jennifer Jones finished the twinbill 4-for-7 with two runs scored, and four driven in, including a solo homer in the opener. Carly White (2-0) earned the game-two win as she fanned four and walked only one.
