Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBERRY, SC – Junior right-hander Taylor Luff pitched a four-hit shutout and scored the game's only run as Francis Marion University beat Newberry College 1-0, but Wolves turned the tables in game two for a 1-0 defeat of the Patriots, Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 6) in women's softball action.

Francis Marion (5-1) will return home to host Mount Olive College for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Luff (3-0) pitched her third complete game and second shutout of the young season in the opener, while also scoring the game's only run. Batting lead-off, she opened the game by reaching on an infield throwing error, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by senior catcher Olivia Ferguson.

Luff also recorded the Patriots' lone hit in the opener, with a bunt single to third base in the top of the third inning.  Newberry senior righty Kaylyn Camacho (1-1) took the hard-luck loss despite striking out 12 Patriots and allowing only the one safety.

Luff fanned 10 and walked just one from the mound.

In the second contest, FMU sophomore right-hander Katie Carnes and Newberry senior righty Shelley Jeffcoat matched zeros through the first four frames. Newberry pushed across the game's only run in the fifth inning as a result of three FMU errors.

Francis Marion, which managed four hits in the second contest, left a runner in scoring position in each of the first, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

Carnes (1-1) allowed just six hits, while issuing only one walk.
