GREENWOOD, SC- Francis Marion University used a solid performance in the circle from freshman right-hander Katie Carnes and sophomore righty Taylor Luff in a Peach Belt Conference twinbill sweep of Lander University 2-0, and 2-1 at Doug Spears Field in Greenwood, S.C.

In game one, Patriot (14-8, 4-2) starter Carnes (6-2) tossed a four-hit shutout, her first as a college hurler.  She struck out seven Bearcats (10-12, 0-4) and issued no walks, while picking up her third win in her last three mound appearances.

FMU scored the only run it would need in its first at bat.  Sophomore left fielder Sara Broderick led off with a single down the left field line, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an RBI single to left center by senior second baseman Ashley Jaramillo.

In the sixth, Jaramillo drew a one-out walk from Hayley Leissner (7-6), and came around to score on a two-out RBI double by sophomore right fielder Jazz Holliday.

Broderick was the lone Patriot with multiple hits as she finished the opener 2-for-4.

Carnes' only problem inning came in the third when the Bearcats loaded the bases with no outs.  However, Lander's Taylor Donson flied out to center fielder Destinea Schneider and she doubled the runner off second base.  Carnes then retired the next batter on a fly out to end the inning.

In four of the seven innings, Carnes retired the Bearcats in order.

The nightcap consisted of Luff (3-2) working 6.1 innings scattering five hits and sitting down five Bearcat hitters courtesy of the strikeout.  Carnes returned to the circle to finish off the victory en route to her first save of her collegiate career.

FMU put all their runs on the board in the first inning, when junior Tristan Faile singled to right field plating Schneider from second for the RBI.  Holliday doubled the Patriot lead in the next at bat grounding out to second but scoring Jaramillo who came all the way around to score after a walk earlier in the frame.

Lander cut the Francis Marion lead in half in the bottom of the second when Alyssa Hartley scored after Casey Corbitt reached on a fielders choice.  Hartley had reached previously in the inning on an error from the FMU shortstop. Luff stranded runners at second and third, however, to escape the inning with the lead.

The Patriots tried to extend the lead in the top of the fifth when they left two runners on base, including Faile on third.  The Bearcats then threatened in the bottom of the final inning loading the bases before Carnes struck out a hitter and induced an Arielle Buchholz  game inning ground out.

Francis Marion will play host to Queens University of Charlotte (8-11) for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday at 1 p.m. on the FMU Softball Field.  Please note the earlier starting time as previous schedules had the twinbill beginning at 3:30 p.m.
