FLORENCE, SC – Senior second baseman Ashley Jaramillo drilled a one-out run-scoring single to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Francis Marion University a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Wingate University and a split of Wednesday's (Feb. 15) non-conference softball doubleheader.
Wingate University won the opener 3-1 behind the four-hit pitching of righty Miranda Paul.
Francis Marion (7-1) will play a doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhyne University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Jaramillo's hit made a winner of freshman right-hander Katie Carnes (3-0) who scattered six hits and struck out 12. Jaramillo was 2-for-5 in the second game, while junior third baseman Tristan Faile went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, senior center fielder Destinea Schneider was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and junior catcher Olivia Ferguson was 2-for-4. The Patriots pounded out 13 hits, but left 13 runners on base.
The Patriots trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the fourth frame, but rallied for three runs on a sacrifice fly by Sara Broderick and run-scoring singles by Schneider and Faile.
The International Tie-Breaker rule was used in the eighth inning. Carnes stranded a Bulldog runner at third in the top of the frame setting the stage for Jaramillo's walk-off hit in the bottom of the inning.
Paul (3-2) was the losing pitcher in relief in the second game. Designated player Betsy Braswell was the lone Wingate player with multiple hits as she went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In the twinbill's opener, FMU took a 1-0 advantage on an RBI double by losing pitcher Kayla Ellingsen (3-1). She finished the game with nine strikeouts.
Wingate tied the score with a single run in the top of the fourth and then pushed across two runs in the top of the sixth on RBI doubles by Brittany Barrineau and Jordyn Setzer.
Faile was 2-for-3 in game one.
Paul fanned four in the opener and did not walk a batter. First baseman Brittany Loudermilt was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
