Patriots lose two one-run decisions to Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

JEFFERSON CITY, TN - Mary Shealy hit a game-deciding two-run homer in game two and picked up a pair of wins on the pitching mound as Carson-Newman College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Francis Marion University, Wednesday afternoon (March 16).  Francis Marion (17-12-1) threatened late in both games but lost 1-0 and 4-3.

In the opener, Carson-Newman's ninth-place hitter Leah Price drilled a two-out RBI single to center field in the bottom of the last inning to account for the only run.  The Eagles improve to 19-8-1.

FMU managed only five hits (by five different players) and stranded seven runners on base, including two in the top of the seventh inning.

FMU junior righty Kayla Ellingsen (7-4) was the tough-luck loser as she allowed only five hits, struck out seven, and walked two.  Shealy (16-6), the Carson-Newman starter, also tossed a five-hitter, while fanning six and walking two.

In the second contest, Shealy hit her two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 2-2 deadlock.  In the top of the seventh, the Patriots scored once on an RBI single by Destinea Schneider, but left the tying run on third and the potential go-ahead run on second as the last out was recorded.

Schneider was 2-for-4 in game two, while second baseman Ashley Jaramillo was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI and catcher Olivia Ferguson was 2-for-3 with a double.

Senior righty Cea Knox (9-7) was the losing pitcher in the second contest as she allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out two.

Shealy earned the game-two win in relief.

FMU will continue its Tennessee road trip as the Patriots will play a doubleheader at Lincoln Memorial University on Thursday at noon.
