Box Score 2 GAFFNEY, SC - Francis Marion University was within five outs of
sweeping its non-conference softball doubleheader at Limestone
College, but the Patriots let a four-run lead slip away and had to
settle for a win (3-2) and tie (4-4) on Tuesday afternoon (March
1). The second game, which FMU led 4-0 heading in to the
bottom of the sixth inning, was called after seven innings because
of darkness.
FMU is now 12-3-1, while the Saints fall to 3-11-1.
In the opener, FMU junior center fielder Destinea Schneider and
senior third baseman Jessica Hogan both collected two hits.
The Patriots scored all three runs of their runs in the top of
the first as Schneider and Sara Broderick both singled. After
a double steal moved both runners up, Hogan drilled an RBI single
up the middle to plate Schneider. Junior second baseman
Ashley Jaramillo followed with a two-run double to center
field.
Limestone answered with a two-run homer by Kayla Kelley in the
bottom of the first. FMU senior right-hander Cea Knox (8-1)
would then allow only three singles and no runs over the final six
frames.
In the second game, Francis Marion scored twice in both the
second and fourth innings. Schneider was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while
Hogan also recorded an RBI in game two with a bases-loaded
walk.
Limestone rallied for four runs on five hits in the bottom of
the sixth inning to tie the score at 4-4. With darkness
closing in, Hogan reached on a one-out error in the top of the
seventh, but was stranded at first.
Junior righty Kayla Ellingsen pitched a complete game for the
Patriots in the second contest, allowing the four runs on 10 hits,
while striking out seven and walking no one.
Francis Marion will play host to USC Aiken for a Peach Belt
Conference twinbill on Thursday at 1 p.m.
