Box Score 2 FLORENCE, SC – Junior second baseman Ashley Jaramillo registered three hits and drove in three runs and junior right-hander Kayla Ellingsen collected a win and a save as Francis Marion University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Mount Olive College, Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 22). Ellingsen pitched 2.1 innings in relief to save game one, a 6-2 Patriot win, while Jaramillo homered and Ellingsen tossed a complete game to pace FMU to a 4-1 victory in the second contest.
Francis Marion improves to 10-3 and will return to Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Georgia College. Mount Olive drops to 4-8.
Senior righty Cea Knox (6-1) allowed only one run on five hits in game one, but she departed in the fifth inning with the Patriots up 2-1. Ellingsen stranded two base runners in that frame and then held the Trojans to a single run over the next two frames to earn her second save of 2011.
The Patriots scored two runs each in the second, fifth, and sixth innings. Junior first baseman Megann Sallinger was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored, and one driven in. Jaramillo batted 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
FMU freshman shortstop Sara Broderick also had two hits in the opener.
Mount Olive's Olivia Poplin and Courtney Bell both had two hits in game one. Kalie Smith plated the Trojan's first run with an infield single in the third, while Kassie Lowe drove home the other run with a seventh-inning ground out.
Sarah Saunders took the loss despite a complete-game effort.
Mount Olive scored in the top of the first in game two on an RBI single up the middle by Katie Moore. Francis Marion tied the contest at 1-1 when Sallinger and Tristan Faile smacked back-to-back doubles in the second frame. Jaramillo gave the Patriots a 3-1 lead when she blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence in the third inning.
The Patriots tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning when Chelle Phillips doubled in pinch-hitter Lindsey Brown, who also had doubled.
Ellingsen (3-1) scattered nine hits over seven innings, while striking out four and walking only one.
Mount Olive starter Kristin Ware was the losing pitcher.
Like the first game, Sallinger had a pair of doubles in game two. Center fielder Destinea Schneider (2-for-4) and Phillips (2-for-3) had multiple hits in the second contest.
