FLORENCE,
SC - Senior left-hander Michaela Wolf picked up a historic win in
almost historic fashion as she helped lead Francis Marion
University to a Senior Day doubleheader sweep of Queens University
of Charlotte, winning 2-0 and 2-1 on Sunday afternoon (April
11) in non-conference women's softball action.
FMU concludes
its regular season 31-12, while Queens drops to 22-23. Both
teams will head into their respective conference tournaments this
week, with Francis Marion hosting the Peach Belt Conference
Tournament beginning on Friday at Freedom Florence.
Wolf
(17-6) struck out the first six Queens batters and did not allow a
base runner until right fielder Keeya Turner dropped a single
into left center field to lead off the seventh and final
inning. She was quickly erased attempting to steal. One
out later, Wolf walked Megan Campbell before closing out the
game. She finished with nine strikeouts in her final
regular-season appearance for FMU. It was her 87th career win
moving her into sole possession of second place on
the PBC's all-time victories list. She already owns
the FMU career record for wins.
Ironically, in her first
career start for Francis Marion, she took a no-hitter into the
seventh inning against USC Aiken on Feb. 8, 2007, before finishing
with a one-hit shutout.
Sophomore
second baseman Ashley Jaramillo provided Wolf with a working margin
when she drilled a two-run triple into right center field in the
fifth inning. Both Jaramillo and senior third baseman Kat
Beauvais finished the opener with two hits.
Sophomore
righty Chantel Dodge (15-10) was the losing pitcher
despite allowing only five hits and the two runs.
In the
second game, freshman first baseman Meghan Heiser hit a
run-scoring fielder's choice grounder in the bottom of the seventh
inning to cap a two-run rally and hand FMU an
exciting 2-1 win.
The
Patriots trailed 1-0 entering the seventh. Beauvais led off
with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Jaramillo tied the score with an RBI double. Wolf then walked
and senior Jessica Birchmeier loaded the bases with a single
setting the stage for Heiser's heroics.
Queens had
taken a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Carrie Beth Richie
reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on a single by Dodge
and continued around to score on a Patriot
error.
Junior Cea Knox
(14-5) earned the win for FMU. She allowed only six hits, while
striking out four and walking no one. Both Beauvais and
Jaramillo were 2-for-4 in the second contest.
Junior
Brandy Jester (7-12) was the hard-luck loser for the
Royals. She was also 2-for-3 at the plate in game two.
Between
games of the twinbill, Francis Marion honored its five seniors:
Wolf, Beauvais, Birchmeier, catcher Jamie Holmes, and pitcher Emily
Dean. The five have accounted for 137 wins ove the past four
seasons.
